14 January Story of Tilasakrat festival

It was a long time ago when human civilization on earth was in its initial stages. A small village was situated on the banks of a river named Tilsakara. The village was famous for its natural beauty, fertile land and its cultural heritage. Every year on January 14, when the cold winds of winter subside and the crops start blooming in the fields, the people of the village celebrate the Tilsakara festival with joy.

Ancient story of Tilasakrat festival

This festival was not just a celebration of harvest, but also a symbol of gratitude towards nature and hard work. It started with an amazing and inspiring incident, which people still remember today.

Miraculous Sesame and Farmer Ramu

A poor farmer Ramu lived in the village. His land was barren, and he was unable to feed his family despite hard work. One day, when Ramu, defeated by his troubles, was sitting in the temple of the village deity, a sage arrived there.

The sage saw deep sadness on Ramu’s face and asked:
“Son, why are you so sad?”

Ramu told the sage about his sorrows and difficulties. The sage listened carefully and took out some sesame seeds from his bag and gave it to Ramu.
He said:

“Sow them on your land. These sesame seeds will change your life. But remember, when you get the first crop from them, offer the first handful to the deityThis mole will make you understand the importance of hard work and the blessing of nature.”

Ramu obeyed the sage and sowed sesame seeds in his field. Within no time, the barren land was filled with greenery, and the sesame crop started flourishing. After harvesting the first crop, Ramu offered thanks to God and distributed dishes made from sesame seeds to all the people in the village.

Establishment of Tilasakrat festival

After the success of Ramu, a new era of prosperity began in the village. Every year on January 14, people prepare dishes made of sesame seeds and jaggery and offer them to the deity and distribute them among each other. They named this day “Tilsakarat”, which means “gratitude to the sesame.”
