It was January, and the cold was at its peak. In the village of Kashipur, farmers braved the harsh weather, working tirelessly in their fields to grow crops and sell them to sustain their families. Among them was Raghu, a poor farmer who lived with his wife, Kunti. Raghu owned a small plot of land, and despite his hard work, the harvest was always limited. This left the couple struggling to make ends meet, often going to bed on an empty stomach.
The village also had a greedy landlord who employed many laborers but exploited them by taking a large portion of their earnings. The laborers received only half their wages, leading to widespread poverty and hunger in the community.

One morning, Raghu said to Kunti, “I’m heading to the field to start digging. If I can prepare the field quickly, I’ll sow the crops sooner and, hopefully, earn a small profit.”
Kunti nodded with concern. “Go ahead. I can’t stop you, especially when we barely have enough to eat. But it’s so cold outside, and I worry about your health.”
“Kunti, you know how poor we are,” Raghu said. “If I let the cold stop me, we’ll have to starve every day. I must act before the weather gets worse.”
As Raghu walked to his field, he met his friend Kishore on the way. “Where are you going in this freezing weather, Raghu?” Kishore asked.
“To the field. I need to start digging. What about you?” Raghu replied.
“I’m heading to my field as well,” Kishore said. “It’s good we met; working together will make it easier. But this cold is unbearable. It feels like nature is testing us poor folk.”
“We can’t let this break us, Kishore,” Raghu said firmly. “If we stay united, we can overcome anything.”

The two friends worked hard in their fields, shivering as they dug the soil. Meanwhile, the wealthy villagers stayed indoors, enjoying the warmth of their fires, while the poor faced the harsh cold without respite.
That evening, Raghu returned home, exhausted. “You’re back,” Kunti said with relief. “Wash your hands and face; I’ll serve dinner.”
“I’m starving,” Raghu said as he freshened up. The meal was simple but enough to ease his hunger.
The next morning, heavy rain began pouring down without warning. Raghu and Kunti were alarmed.
“Kunti, this rain is too much. If it continues, the fields will flood, and we won’t be able to plant crops. What will we do?”
“I don’t know,” Kunti said, her voice filled with worry. “This storm seems unrelenting. I hope it doesn’t destroy the village.”

The rain continued for hours, leaving the fields submerged. Raghu sat helplessly, pondering their grim future. “Kunti, our fields are ruined. I don’t have the money to start anything else, and there’s no one who can help us.”
After a moment of thought, Kunti suggested, “We still have ₹200 saved. Buy some cotton and fabric. I’ll make a quilt so at least we can stay warm in this cold.”
Raghu agreed and went to the market. He purchased three kilos of cotton and some fabric with the ₹200 and brought them home. Kunti worked diligently and, within a few hours, crafted a warm, beautiful quilt.
“This is amazing, Kunti,” Raghu said. “It will keep us warm through this harsh winter.”
The next day, Kishore visited their home and admired the quilt. “This is excellent work, Kunti! Why don’t you make more quilts and sell them? It could become a source of income for you,” Kishore suggested.
“But we don’t have enough money to buy more cotton,” Raghu said.
“Don’t worry about that,” Kishore said, handing him ₹1,000. “Use this to buy materials and start making quilts. You can repay me later.”

Grateful for his friend’s generosity, Raghu purchased more cotton and fabric. Kunti worked hard, and within a few days, she had several quilts ready. Raghu took them to the market, where customers flocked to buy the warm quilts. All the quilts sold out quickly.
When Raghu returned home, he shared the news with Kunti. “We sold all the quilts! People loved them,” he said excitedly.
Kunti smiled, relieved. “This will help us survive the winter and cover our expenses.”
Over time, Raghu and Kunti turned their quilt-making into a small business. The warm quilts brought comfort to many poor villagers during the harsh winter, and Raghu’s family finally found a way to rise above their struggles, proving that perseverance and unity could conquer even the toughest challenges.
