January and the Harsh Winter
It was the month of January, and the cold was at its peak. The farmers of Kashipur village were toiling in their fields despite the freezing weather to grow crops and feed their families. In the same village lived a poor farmer named Raghu with his wife, Kunti. Raghu owned a small piece of land, but due to its limited size, his harvest was insufficient. Their situation was so dire that they often went to bed on an empty stomach.
The Village Struggle and the Exploitative Landlord
The village had a ruthless landlord who exploited the laborers by keeping a large portion of their earnings. This led to widespread poverty and hunger in the community. Raghu told his wife, “I’m going to the field to dig the soil. If the crop grows well this time, we might make a small profit.” Kunti replied, “Go ahead. We have no choice since the food supply is almost gone. If you don’t work hard, we’ll remain hungry.”

Braving the cold, Raghu headed toward his field. On the way, he met his friend Kishore, who said, “Raghu, it’s freezing, but let’s work together. It will be easier for both of us.” The two friends worked tirelessly in their fields, shivering as they dug the soil.
The Havoc of Rain
As they returned home in the evening, dark clouds began to gather in the sky. The next morning, heavy rain started pouring. Raghu, worried, told Kunti, “If this rain doesn’t stop, our fields will flood, and we won’t be able to plant the crops.” Kunti, equally anxious, said, “What will we do now? We have no money or alternative means of livelihood.”
The rain continued for seven hours, leaving the fields waterlogged. Raghu returned home, dejected, and said to Kunti, “It’s impossible to plant crops now. How will we survive without income?”
The Need for Warmth
Kunti suggested, “We have ₹200. Use it to buy some cotton and a quilt cover. At least we’ll stay warm in this freezing weather.” Raghu went to the shop and purchased three kilograms of cotton and a quilt cover. Kunti worked hard to make the quilt, which turned out to be warm and beautiful. Raghu praised her efforts.
Just then, Kishore arrived and said, “Sister-in-law, this quilt is excellent. Why don’t you make more and sell them? It could help cover your household expenses.” Raghu found the idea promising. Kishore even gave him ₹1000 to buy more materials.

A New Business Venture
Raghu and Kunti worked together to make several quilts. The next morning, Raghu took the quilts to the market. To his surprise, all the quilts sold quickly. He returned home with the earnings and shared the good news with Kunti, who was overjoyed.
The Beginning of Success
Through their hard work and ingenuity, Raghu and Kunti overcame the harsh winter. Their quilts not only became a source of income but also provided warmth to other villagers. Gradually, Raghu’s business expanded, improving their lives significantly.
