Preparations for Changes in Education Policy, Key Decisions by the Trump Administration

A major shift in education policies is expected in the United States. Several significant education-related issues are on President Donald Trump’s administration’s agenda. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has made some recommendations that many schools follow, but the final decision on student requirements lies with school administrations. President Trump has the power to withhold education funding, which can indirectly pressure schools. Discussions on these issues are ongoing, and it will be interesting to see what steps are taken next.

Meanwhile, Linda McMahon is undergoing her confirmation hearing for the position of Education Secretary. In her testimony, she stated that she wants to reform the agency and focus on parental rights and fundamental education. This aligns with the ideology that President Trump emphasized during his election campaign. However, McMahon has gone a step further, agreeing with Trump’s promise to completely eliminate the Department of Education (DOE). Trump aims to transfer the department’s responsibilities either to state governments or other federal agencies.

Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders questioned McMahon sharply on this issue. He clarified that President Trump cannot unilaterally abolish the Department of Education; he would require congressional approval. McMahon acknowledged that a congressional bill would be necessary to eliminate the DOE. Given the current political landscape, this seems challenging, as it would require at least 60 votes, including support from Democratic senators.

Additionally, discussions have intensified regarding Kash Patel’s nomination. He is now set for a final vote in the Senate. So far, no Republican senator has publicly opposed him, strengthening the likelihood of his confirmation. Trump’s previous three controversial cabinet picks RFK Jr., Pete Heth, and Tulsi Gabbard—have already been confirmed. Patel is the last remaining nominee, and the Senate will vote on his appointment soon.

Political analysts believe that Kash Patel’s confirmation will not face major hurdles, as there has been no significant opposition from within the Republican Party. Patel can only afford to lose three Republican votes in the Senate, but current indications suggest that most votes will be in his favor.

The Trump administration is taking an aggressive stance on education policy and key cabinet appointments. The elimination of the Department of Education and new appointments could spark further controversy. In the coming weeks, it will be crucial to see whether Democratic and Republican leaders can reach a consensus or if conflicts over education policy continue to escalate.
