Emergency Film Review: Strengths and Weaknesses
When the first look of Emergency was released, it was met with immense praise. People anticipated it to be one of the finest performances in Indian cinema history. However, now that the film has hit the theaters, the reality is starkly different. The theaters are empty, and it seems even the film’s cast might not be too keen on watching it.
The film’s release date was postponed so many times that it almost feels like Kangana herself might have lost track of when it was coming out. Moreover, in today’s times, films are judged not only for their content but also through the lens of propaganda and the personal lives of their cast members. Kangana’s film, unfortunately, was already plagued by controversy even before it reached audiences.
A Film on Indira Gandhi, But Lacks Depth
A compelling subject like Indira Gandhi, a talented artist like Kangana Ranaut, and a fascinating chapter in Indian politics—all these elements could have combined to create something extraordinary. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. The film failed to live up to the expectations it had set.

Kangana tried to showcase both the personal and political sides of Indira Gandhi’s life, which was a commendable attempt. However, the execution lacked finesse. Certain scenes, like Indira confronting the “demon” within herself, demonstrated Kangana’s creative vision but fell flat in terms of emotional impact.
Indira Gandhi’s character, which had the potential to be immensely powerful, ended up feeling lackluster. The story lacked the depth and gravity it needed.
