The Ancient Tale of Makar Sankranti: The Significance of Dharmaraj’s Grace
Hello friends,
Today, we bring you an ancient and inspiring story associated with Makar Sankranti. This tale not only highlights its religious significance but also emphasizes the impact of righteousness and virtue.
The Story of Haridas and Gunvati
Long ago, in a prosperous kingdom, there lived a devout Vishnu follower named Haridas with his virtuous wife, Gunvati. Gunvati was a pious and devoted woman, known for her unwavering faith in Lord Vishnu. She observed many religious fasts and rituals, such as Ekadashi, and always lived a life of virtue and righteousness.
Gunvati was also known for her hospitality, never hesitating to serve guests. However, there was one aspect she overlooked – she never worshipped Dharmaraj, the god of justice.
Gunvati’s Death and Her Journey to Dharmaloka
Eventually, Gunvati passed away. Due to her righteous deeds, the messengers of Yama (Yamdoots) respectfully escorted her to Dharmaloka, the abode of Dharmaraj. There, she saw a grand and magnificent temple at the center of the city, where Dharmaraj resided alongside Chitragupta, his divine accountant, who maintained records of every person’s deeds.
When Gunvati stood before Dharmaraj, she trembled with fear. Chitragupta began recounting all her virtues and sins. While Dharmaraj was pleased with her devotion and righteous actions, he appeared sorrowful.
The Reason Behind Dharmaraj’s Sorrow
Noticing his sorrow, Gunvati humbly asked, “O Lord, why do you appear distressed? Please tell me the reason.”
Dharmaraj replied, “O virtuous lady, though you have performed many fasts, rituals, and charitable acts, you have never worshipped me or observed any fasts or offerings in my name. This is why I am saddened.”
Hearing this, Gunvati folded her hands and said, “O Lord, forgive my ignorance. I was unaware of the way to worship you. Please guide me and show me how humans can earn your blessings.”
The Importance of Makar Sankranti
Dharmaraj said, “When the Sun enters the northern hemisphere, marking the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, it is the holiest day to begin my worship. On this day, listening to my story, performing rituals, and engaging in charity bring immense blessings. By observing this, humans are freed from all sorrows and attain eternal happiness.”
Gunvati then pleaded, “O Lord, if this is so, please release me from these messengers of Yama and send me back to the mortal world, so I can spread the knowledge of your worship and story.” Moved by her devotion and sincerity, Dharmaraj granted her wish and allowed her to return to earth.
Gunvati’s Return and the Propagation of Dharmaraj’s Worship
Gunvati came back to life, much to the astonishment of her family. Her husband and children were overjoyed to see her alive. She narrated her divine experience and Dharmaraj’s words to her family.
From that day, Gunvati, along with her husband and children, began worshipping Dharmaraj with full devotion, starting on Makar Sankranti. They also performed acts of charity and encouraged others to do the same.
The Result of Worship
After a year of devoted worship and listening to Dharmaraj’s tales, Gunvati lived a life filled with joy and prosperity. Upon her passing, she was honored and welcomed in heaven by the gods.
